A wander through Winchester’s beautiful watermeadows to Shawford
I’m lucky enough to have Winchester’s beautiful watermeadows on my doorstep and rarely a week goes by when I don’t run or walk through them. My favourite route starts out in Winchester and follows the Itchen Way to Shawford.
Park in the car park at the base of St. Catherine’s Hill and follow the path that passes alongside the hill. This will lead to a crossing which takes you under the motorway and then onto the riverbanks of the Itchen. Here the easygoing footpath follows the water as it gently winds its way through the glorious countryside. Along the way you’ll find several spots where the deep pools are perfect for taking a dip. On a sunny day, they may prove irresistible so be sure to go prepared in case you’re tempted.
The footpath will eventually bring you out onto a bridge in Shawford. Take a right turn and you’ll find The Bridge. The interior has recently been freshened up but the real draw is the garden overlooking the river – a great place to sit back and take in some well earned refreshments before turning home.
TIYK Top Tip! Don’t be tempted to take bikes. The path is narrow and best suited for walkers. There are lots of stiles along the way too which make it tricky for cyclists.
